The Death of Dissent

The suppression of dissent began quietly, with the distribution of educational materials that clashed with the principles that had guided this country to greatness. They questioned virtually every accepted principle of the people who were attempting to raise the children being taught ‘new math,’ ‘new history,’ and ‘new science.’ –No longer was it acceptable to accept objective fact and data, it was necessary to view all things in a subtly nuanced way. –Filtered through the lens of objective reality.

The very nature of good and evil came into question. Evil, say in the case of a Hitler or a Stalin or Castro or Mao, became relative. The Holocaust, the purges, the concentration camps and gulags, they were often attributed to bias or downplayed to a lesser impact. Personal responsibility became an anachronistic idea, morality was considered a form of hate because it implied a level of judgment against people who were helpless victims of circumstance and unable to change their proclivities. This became the subtle, and later unsubtle, -message that was transmitted via the internet, the radios, and the televisions.

In this fashion, those who spoke about right and wrong became extremists and ‘haters.’ –Marginalized because they didn’t agree with the spew that emitted from virtually every governmental and public fountain. Persons of Christian faith (and other faiths to a lesser degree) -were denigrated as less than intelligent, dangerous, and irrelevant. Societal standards of conduct were reversed.

This is where we stand today.

I fear that we can’t reverse what our lax attitudes have allowed to pass.

Tomorrow will bring more changes. I think we are unlikely to like the results.

Judging by the reaction of the congress and the administration to dissent, I think it likely that hate crime legislation is coming in the very near future. Hate crime legislation that will narrow the allowable level of dissent to a bare yea and nay minimum. –Any elaboration of conservative or religious values may soon be a crime.

The ownership of guns will be severely restricted to mostly the criminal class and the government.

Euthanasia may be coming soon to an assisted ‘living’ facility or nursing home near you, courtesy of socialized medicine. After all, a person’s utility to the country can be valued and a dollar cost limit established with modern actuarial techniques…

Your can bet that your carbon impact upon the environment will soon be a factor in how you are allowed to live. –After all, we are the greatest causers of harm to the environment in the world today, wasters and despoilers of everything that we touch…

Taxes will be levied against religious organizations that fail to toe the party line, as they clearly violate the ‘rights’ of their fellow persons to live as they choose. Churches that are against abortion recognize sin in many forms, etc… -All will be taxed because they fail to meet the narrowed standards of tax-exempt organizations and are ‘exclusive’…

Increasingly, the shift to democracy (as opposed to being a republic as the founding fathers wished) –will cause the country to slip into populism. We will be governed by public opinion polls which will increasingly overtly denigrate dissenting views, and ultimately they will be abolished.

Far-fetched? –I really hope so.

I think that our only hope is that they go too fast. –That they raise their activity to a level that causes dissent among the couch potatoes sufficient enough to make them leave their couches and make a stand. Otherwise, we are already beaten because we have been asleep at the wheel for so many years while they worked their magic with the young of our country.

The Obama Peace Dividend

I was reading Colonel North’s latest column about the coming defense cuts that will most likely disembowel our military and I thought to myself, “Goodness gracious Colonel North, we need to get with the program.” As an old sailor and an Air Force brat, I am familiar with the ebb and flow of the political consciousness in our country. This is nothing new; it's the 'peace dividend' all over again.

After every conflict, we have sent our young men home (and later women as well) -with the fleeting gratitude of a dove-ish nation. We have shut down bases and cut procurement and development monies in the name of a peace dividend. -Only to be taken unawares and unprepared by the next conflict.

Only eight years after 9/11, the country has lost its stomach for facing down the bullies and murderers that populate the globe and menace our shores. Much like our amnesiac congress, they forget the anger and fear that permeated the social consciousness after the attacks and disavow their cries for retribution. They whine that it costs too much, that it is just too difficult, while our soldiers try to fight on.

Our brave young men and women in uniform stand ready to defend us, only to be deserted on the fields of battle by a people and a government that has no courage to continue the fight to its conclusion. They are once-again dishonored, as their grandfathers were after WWI & WWII. -Because their people and their leaders are too near-sighted to recognize the dangers that still exist and that have already cost us the lives of so many.

Can we expect more from a spineless group that proudly set aside (without prejudice) the charges against the mastermind of the Cole bombing and then had the gall to face the sailor's widows and grieving parents? As a sailor and patriot, I find this last almost more than I can forgive. What will this do to the morale of the much smaller force that must face these dangers after the gutting of our defense budget? -All the while feeling the disdain and contempt of their political leaders.

Will they answer the bell when their wounded country calls them in their hour of greatest need? -When our emboldened enemies laughingly attack again? I think they will. I hope that they will. But we really do not deserve the honor that they do for us.

We should be ashamed that we let it happen.

I am ashamed of what we have come to be; a weak and lost people, swung by every ill wind and without a moral compass. -Shame on us all. -We steal our children's future, dishonor our honored dead, and leave a mission of hope only fractionally done. Why should any partner ever trust us, or our children ever forgive us?
